About the role:
The ODPP seeks solicitors with a strong interest in criminal law for roles throughout NSW. Our head office is in Sydney, where the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Deputy Directors, the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and their legal and administrative support staff are based.
We have three western Sydney offices in Parramatta, Penrith and Campbelltown, and six offices in regional NSW in Lismore, Newcastle, Gosford, Wagga Wagga, Dubbo and Wollongong. Solicitors and Crown Prosecutors in our regional offices conduct prosecutions in circuit courts within their region.
As a solicitor you will manage a large and varied criminal law practice, you will also:
- instruct Counsel and other prosecutors in all criminal law jurisdictions.
- assess less complex briefs of evidence and prepare advice about the sufficiency of the evidence and appropriate charges.
- assist in the negotiation of pleas of guilty in appropriate matters.
- undertake less complex advocacy work.
This is a general recruitment, and a talent pool will be created to fill ongoing and temporary vacancies that may arise in the next 18 months in both regional and metropolitan offices.
About you:
- be an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
- you will have a degree or diploma in law and admission as an Australian legal practitioner.
- you will have obtained a Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of NSW prior to commencing.
- you will have demonstrated ability to undertake less complex advocacy work.
- you will be able to actively listen, explain complex concepts and arguments to individuals and groups, tailor communication to various audiences, and write fluently in a range of styles and formats.
- you will have sound decision making skills, the ability to problem solve, manage your time, project manage and keep organised.
- if interested in our regional offices, you will need to have a current driver's licence.

Interviews
The interview process will be conducted virtually, and no travel will be required. The interview process will include capability-based assessments which may require your time and presence on more than one day.

You are required to demonstrate your suitability and claim for the role by addressing the following two targeted questions within the body of your cover letter:
Q1. Outline your experience that demonstrates your ability to manage a litigation practice including providing legal advice, instructing Counsel and undertaking less complex advocacy work. Experience in criminal law matters will be considered favourably.
Q2. Describe how you have demonstrated excellent communication skills and the ability to be a team player while complying with strict time standards.
